Last week I took the opportunity of going to London! Not to see the Queen, but to visit ‘I Do Couture’, a fairly new bridal wear establishment (nearest tube stations: Barbican or Moorgate) based in the heart of the City (207 Whitecross Street, London EC1Y 8QP).
Mention the word ‘Couture’ to any Bride-to-be & most will immediately think expensive! However, I Do Couture’s refreshing approach is to offer designer wedding dresses & accessories at less- than- couture prices – affordable couture! Prices for their Couture range start at £1,500 with their ready to wear collection starting at £700. Focused heavily on customer service they offer each Bride-to-be a wonderful bespoke experience, akin to shopping for her dream dress. A little bit of fairy dust is also included (see below) to complete the fairy-tale!
The idea for the business first came about following a proposal (eek!), after which two Cambridge Undergraduates started planning their dream wedding. Armed with a wish-list & a healthy budget, the excited Bride-to-be, together with her 3 close friends (all from Cambridge University), set about finding the perfect wedding dress. What they believed would be an enjoyable experience turned out to be, for them, a huge disappointment & with the clock ticking the absence of ‘the dress’ caused a great deal of concern & stress (us girlies all know that feeling!). The biggest problem the girls encountered was that the perfect dress was simply too expensive (average London couture prices start at £10,000). In addition, they found the high street designs offered very little in the way of adjustments, the majority only offering alterations for fit & length. So, after an exhausting 12 month search & still no dress, I Do Couture was born!
‘Couture’ by definition means: ‘The business of designing, making & selling highly fashionable, usually custom-made, clothing to women’ and I Do Couture certainly do that. A Bride-to-be’s experience starts with an appointment which has to be pre-booked. A personal consultation, over tea & coffee, will firstly establish your wedding date & logistics, whether you have a style or theme in mind, as well as gaining an understanding about your perfect dress. Then it’s dressing up time!
With a stock of stunning wedding gowns incorporating the classic designs such as fishtail, A-line, princess, mermaid & column dresses, you are certainly spoilt for choice. Ooh & yes, the fairy dust I referred to above is that, in addition to the beautiful dresses already lovingly designed by the I Do Couture team in Hong Kong, I Do Couture allow you pick n mix parts of the dress in terms of changing the skirt, from one dress to another, the addition/removal/change of sleeve detail, bodice detail etc. – the choices are endless & you can add as much additional beading & bling as you want. The end result is a stunning wedding dress of your dreams – a pleasant surprise for couture!
Having seen for myself the team’s inspirational ideas for the bridal wear business, I wish Selina, Cathy, Cheryl, Claire & Charles (Techie contact) at I Do Couture, all the very best for the future. Excitement is indeed building about this unique store in the City of London & it’s very easy to see why ……
